Service Programs
OSAF advises the Duke Partnership for Service and a number of student-run community service initiatives, as well as coordinates the Alternative Spring Break program.
Duke Partnership for Service
The Duke Partnership for Service is a new student-run organization that helps students make a difference by connecting them with the causes that matter most to them. The goal of DPS is to build a new service community at Duke that's more innovative, effective, entrepreneurial, and most of all, personal. Future initiatives likely will include a $10,000 university-wide case competition, an interactive service opportunities website, a cool grassroots recruitment campaign, a collaborative social and work space for all students, and a strategic vision for the future of service at Duke that's written and approved by students.
Alternative Spring Break
Held during the traditional spring break period, Alternative Spring Break gives students the chance to participate in short service projects, engage in experiential learning and become aware of issues affecting communities with which they may not otherwise interact. Universities throughout the country sponsor alternative breaks, many which occur during fall and winter as well. In recent years, Duke students have participated in Alternative Spring Breaks in the following destinations:
- Florida Everglades
- New Orleans
- Tuba City, Arizona with the Navajo Nation
- Charlotte, NC
- Atlanta, GA
- Washington, DC
