2009 Duke Student Leadership Retreat at Beaufort Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a way we are going to arrange carpooling to Beaufort?
We travel as a group and take a bus.

Can I come a day late or leave a day early?

No. For liability purposes, everyone must travel to Beaufort as a group.

What do I need to bring to wear?

The weather is warm in August in North Carolina as you have all experienced. Bring comfortable clothes, don’t worry about dressing up because you will be doing activities all day. You will be staying in dorms, so you might want to remember shower shoes. The buildings tend to be a little chilly inside and the evenings can get a little windy since we are right on the coast, so bring a sweater or sweatshirt. Other than that, this isn’t a formal convention and bring whatever makes you most comfortable. BRING A SWEATSHIRTor SWEATER!!

You should wear loose, comfortable, casual clothes  and  CLOSE TOED shoes for our Friday activities.

Do I need to bring lots of money?

We may stop along the way as we travel, but that is the only time you will need money. The whole trip is covered . Yay for free things.

What do I do if I need to fly in Thursday night and have no place to stay?
We will try to arrange for you to stay with someone who has a residence hall room or apartment on Thursday night before you move in on Friday.

Do we really get back on the 17th and classes start on the 24th? What do I DO during that week?
Move in, get your room arranged, go visit friends/family and have (SAFE) fun catching up with your friends! Volunteer with Move-In! No class! Enjoy yourself!

How are we allowed to move in early? Housing Assignments told me that upperclassmen don’t move in until later.
We rule the school. That’s how. (We have been give special permission- we will explain more.)

Are there special cancellation procedures if I cannot make the trip?

Just let us know as soon as an emergency or uncontrollable circumstance comes up. We have other potential retreat attendees on the waiting list just itching to have your spot and we need to accommodate for them as soon as we can.

I'm a FAC. Will we be back in time for FAC training?

No, FAC move-in and training begins before we arrive back on campus.

What type of living quarters do we stay in at Beaufort?

Dorms with bunk beds! Like summer camp!! Not just bunk beds...TRIPLE BUNK BEDS! You may want to bring your own pillow and blanket.

What is the food like?
Dining hall style.  It's actually very delicious and there are vegetarian and vegan options.

How long does it take to get there?
About 3.5 hours by bus.

Do we have any free time or are we always doing stuff?
You will have free time to go to the beach a few times throughout the trip. There’s also a bit of down time around meal time and between each set of sessions.

What time do I need to be here Friday?

More information to come soon.

Is there anything else I should bring?

Yes.  If you have one, you should bring your own water bottle.
